MANAGEMENT OF THE CILACAP MANGROVE FOREST

The mangrove forest in Cilacap is the largest existing mangrove in Java which has increasing importance as ecosystem as well as natural resource for the region. This forest is now degrading due to the densetion of the area surronding the forest, siltation by the Citanduy River and pollution from the existing industries in Cilacap.

Management based on sustained yield has been done since 1930, but it could not prevent the forest from deteriorating. One of the Factors was the failure of natural regeneration due to disturbance by people and nature. Artificial regeneration with nurseries has developed and it shows promising results for rehabilitation purposes.

Another important factor to be taken into account in managing this forest is to protect the forest against disturbance by people is methods simultaneously practiced are the prosperity and security approcches. The existing and comingindustries built in Cilacap will be existence of the mangrove forest. Therefore early studies and measures to prevent deterioration of the forest due to pollution be done.
